Library December Programs for Children and Adults

All the programs below take place at the Ponca City Library at 515 E. Grand Ave. 74601

December 1-22

Christmas Ornament Design Contest

This contest is for all ages, and winners will be chosen from the following age groups:

Children: 0-12, Teens: 13-18, Adults: 18+

The library will provide a limited number of ornaments for pick-up at the library reference desk! Please feel free to bring your own ornament in for the contest! 

Winners will be called December 29.


December 2-7

Gingerbread House Contest

This contest is for all ages, and winners will be chosen from the following age groups:

Teens: 13-18, Youth: 5-12; Team: (group of family or friends)

a. All building materials must be edible (except base)

b. Entries should not exceed 16 inches deep by 12 inches wide.

c. All houses should on a firm base to support and carry the Gingerbread House.

d. Graham crackers can be substituted for gingerbread in the Youth Category.

e. You will be assigned a number when you return your entry form. (Please ask for one if you do not get one)

f. You must fill out everything on the entry form.

g. December 7th is the last day to bring in a house.

h. All Gingerbread Houses will be on display in the library.

i. Entries will be judged by the Friends of the Library on December 8, and winners will be contacted by phone.

j. Houses may be picked up after the winners have been notified any time after 5:30 pm on December 8th.

k. Each participant will have until December 9th by 5:30 pm to pick up their houses or they will be discarded.

Hint: Try not to eat your Gingerbread House before entry and have fun making it!


Saturday, December 2

Gingerbread House Workshop

Pre-registration event: See above for how to register

Limit: 20 participants

10:00-11:00 am and 1:00-2:00 pm

Limit: 20 participants for each workshop

Children of all ages can decorate a gingerbread house of their very own! All supplies will be included.


Tueday, December 5

Faux Terrarium Glass Ornament Craft

Pre-registration event: See above for how to register

Limit: 20 participants

6:00 pm

Recommended for ages 16+

All supplies will be provided. This is a great holiday gift for someone to create for the Ponca City Library Ornament Contest.


Wednesday, December 6

Story time and Craft

11:00-12:00 pm

Recommended ages 0–6 will enjoy a fun singing exercise and then embark on an enchanting storybook read by the Children’s Librarian followed by a unique craft.

 

Thursday, December 7  

Origami

3:00-5:30 pm

Come and go – recommended for all ages

This is a FREE program to attend, and all supplies will be provided. Just show up with your creativity. For more information call the Ponca City Library.


Friday, December 8

Friends of the Library Open House

9:00 am-4:00 pm

Recommended for children and families

Children can use their imagination and creativity to build something using toy blocks of all shapes and sizes.

Meet Santa

3:30-5:30 pm

Santa will be taking time out of his busy schedule to personally visit the Ponca City Library! So please grab your kids and a camera for a chance to meet Santa.

Festive Light Craft

Pre-registration event: See above for how to register

Limit: 20 participants

6:00-7:15 pm

Recommended for ages 16+

This is a FREE program to attend and all materials will be provided.


Wednesday, December 13

Story time and Craft

11:00-12:00 pm

Recommended ages 0–6 will enjoy a fun singing exercise and then embark on an enchanting storybook read by the Children’s Librarian followed by a unique craft.


Thursday, December 14

Origami: 3D Ornaments & Stars

3:00-5:30 pm

Come and go – recommended for 8+ (unless accompanied by a guardian. Some of the instructions might be hard to follow for younger participants. Patrons who participate will be guided by 2 Library staff instructors.

FREE self-guided origami instructions and materials will be provided. For more information call the Ponca City Library.

Sewing Circle: Christmas Ornament

Pre-registration event: See above for how to register

6:00-8:00 pm Ages 16+ recommended with experience in crochet

All supplies will be provided for this program! Feel free to enter your ornament in the contest. Just ask the library staff for more formation.

OKC Zoo: Gotta Go! Gotta go!

1:00-2:00 pm

“I gotta go! I gotta go! I gotta go to Mexico!” says creepy, crawly caterpillar. There’s a chill in the air, and little caterpillar knows it’s time to go where it’s warm! Just like the caterpillar, many animals make a trip south for a warm winter vacation. Why do they do it? How do they do it? Based on Sam Swope’s award-winning book, Gotta Go! Gotta Go!, this fun program will explore some of the most amazing animal migrations.

Book Club: Book Talk

This book club is recommended for ages 16 and older. We normally have a new book every month but this month we will be discussing what everyone is currently reading and hand out new books for next month.


Wednesday, December 20

Story time and Craft

Holiday Rock Painting

Pre-registration event: See above for how to register

3:00 pm

Limit: 30 participants

This is a free come and go program has something fun for the entire family to enjoy!

Adult Winter Read

Ages 18+

Receive a FREE Book bag and instant prizes just for Reading!

Each patron who signs up will only get 1 bag per initial sign up! Participants may enter to win more than once but must fill out a card each time. Only 1 participation prize per person will be given. To qualify to be entered to win you must read 6 books per card, and the card needs to be filled out completely front and back! Most importantly enjoy a great book and have fun!

All Winter Read Cards must be turned in by February 28  to be entered in to win the grand prize!

Winner of Grand Prize will be announced March 1.

Family Movie Showing: “Elf” Rated PG

1:00 pm

The library will provide a fun Buddy the Elf approved treat of super sweet spaghetti and other refreshments. The movie will be featured in the library program room downstairs.


Friday, December 22

Family Christmas Movie Showing: “Rudolf the Red-Nose Reindeer” Rated G

1:00 pm

The library will provide refreshments. The movie will be featured in the library program room downstairs.

Global Freeze Escape Room

Pre-registration event: See above for how to register

1:00-8:00 pm

 Groups of 6 or less will have 45 minutes or less to “escape” by solving a series of puzzles.
