The L.A. Cann Estate operates from the interest from a trust and through funds generated from rentals and user fees for the estate. The Lester and Mary Cann Memorial Garden Center is located at 14th Street and Grand Avenue.
The home was built in 1908 by Lester and Mary Cann, prominent citizens of Ponca City for 50 years. Mr. Cann served as Kay County Commissioner and was later appointed City Manager of Ponca City (serving 1934-1948). The home and approximately 10 acres were donated by their daughter, Elsie, for the use and enjoyment of the citizens of Ponca City, with a particular emphasis on garden-related activities.
Cann Estate Gardens
A pathway meanders through the color-coordinated beds of perennials, herbs, and annuals. The botanical gardens feature a wisteria arbor and lily pond. Local garden clubs hold their monthly meetings in the home. The garden is the location for the Annual Herb Festival held the first Saturday of June each year. A portion of the funds raised by the Herb Festival is donated for the improvement of the garden.
The gardens are open daily from daylight to dusk. Cann Memorial Garden is a popular location for outdoor weddings, receptions, and small bridal or baby showers. Reservations may be made up to one year in advance.
