The Parks and Recreation Department
operates two greenhouses that are 750 square feet each. The greenhouses are a cost-saving mechanism for the city as they produce over 30,000 plants annually. During the winter, the greenhouses hold over 2,000 plants that are not winter hardy. The greenhouses are used to produce plant materials for the beautification of the City of Ponca City. Employees of the Parks and Recreation Department work behind the scenes at most community festivals and events by providing tables, temporary electrical services, litter containers, and other event necessities. They also support City functions by:
- Hanging city holiday decorations
- Installing pole banners with the help of the Traffic Engineering Department
- Maintaining the City Hall fountain
- Providing building maintenance support for city facilities
The Park Ranger is also funded through the Parks and Recreation budget, and is responsible for the security of the Lake Ponca Recreation Area, which includes Lake Ponca Park, campgrounds, the Nature Center, Lake Ponca, and the roadway around Lake Ponca.
