1. Why does a fire engine sometimes accompany an ambulance on medical emergencies?: Additional personnel or emergency resources are occasionally needed to provide life-saving treatment to a patient. Examples of such medical emergencies are cardiac arrest, severe trauma, or bariatric care. For example, in the instance of cardiac arrest, while two EMTs (emergency medical technicians) are dedicated to performing CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, which must not be interrupted), additional medical personnel are needed to administer life-saving drugs, to perform advanced life support procedures and to lift and maneuver the patient during transport.

2. What personnel respond to ambulance calls?: Fire department personnel, who respond to ambulance calls, are cross-trained in the Emergency Medical Services to varying degrees of licensure, including EMTs – of Basic, Intermediate, and Paramedic levels. Clinical training in the area of basic and advanced life support medical protocols is delivered to all personnel in order to satisfy the continuing education requirements set forth for recertification by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians agency.

3. What is the response area for Ambulance?: The primary ambulance services response area is 19.3 square miles within the Ponca City limits, and 445 square miles of rural area: 220 square miles in Kay County, 125 square miles in Noble County, and 100 square miles in Osage County.
